8 · Conventions & extensions

Status: stub.

A convention is an agreement layered on top of the core spec for a particular domain. This chapter draws the line between "core Zarr" and "things built on Zarr."

What this chapter will cover

  • What a convention is and why it lives outside the core spec.
  • Worked examples: GeoZarr (geospatial) and OME-NGFF (bioimaging) — what they add and why.
  • How conventions use the spec's extension points rather than changing the spec.
  • The mental test: "is this the spec, or a convention on top of it?"
